Hello, Tumblr
This is the third time this week I will have worked past midnight
the latest I started working this week was 9 am and that was because there was something so urgent I HAD TO BE CALLED AND WOKEN UP after working ‘till nearly 3am the night before.
Work is trying to kill me.
So is my physiotherapist (though I’m pretty sure this is ostensibly for my own good.)
I am really...

Senate Passes Back to Work Legislation for Canada...
Now all it needs is royal assent to become law.
It should be noted that this was not a simple or straight forward passing, there were several hours of debates and speeches, and they called witnesses before the Senate, which is more oversight than the House had. Many similar comments were brought up about the wage legislation as well as concern regarding the wording and whether or not it was...

Canada Post Back to Work Legislation Passes House
In a letter to Jack Layton, CUPW President thanks the NDP for their efforts, as well as the efforts of thousands of others throughout the country, but it has not been enough to resolve the impasse. The NDP proposed several amendments to the bill, each one voted down by the Conservatives.
The bill must now pass the Senate, who will sit tomorrow in a Sunday session for a reading. If the bill is...

Dear Conservatives
“Socialists” should not be a bad word in Canada. Please stop using it like that.

Let's Talk About Canada Post (briefly)
I’m a bit stymied, honestly, because I’d love to know the specific positions that Canada Post has taken and what specific negotiations are being addressed, but of course, these are not available to me on the web. I am using what information is available to me, via CPACE and the internet (which, for once, failed to give me all the glorious information I needed from multiple...

Canada Keeps Asbestos Off UN Hazardous List →
OTTAWA — Canada has single-handedly blocked listing chrysotile asbestos as a hazardous chemical, the United Nations confirmed Wednesday, even as the Conservative government maintained its silence back home.
At a summit in Switzerland, Canada’s delegation ended days of silence and speculation by opposing the inclusion of asbestos on a UN treaty called the Rotterdam Convention.
“Yes,...

Accept Reforms or Go, Canada Tells Syria's Assad →
Canada’s top diplomat says Syria’s President Bashar Assad has a choice to make – allow real political reform or go.
Foreign Minister John Baird said in a statement issued late Monday that Syrians have endured terrible crimes at the hands of Mr. Assad’s regime and they want real change now, not at some undefined later date.
“Canada joins several allies in saying the president has a choice: he...

Canada Urges Europe Not To Dawdle in Greek Crisis →
TORONTO — Canada stepped up pressure on Europe on Monday to swiftly resolve the Greek debt crisis, warning that failure to do so could harm even Canada’s relatively healthy banking sector.
In the strongest sign yet that Europe’s partners are increasingly jittery about a possible Greek default, Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said finance ministers and central bankers from the Group of...

Man robbed bank for $1 to cover jail health care
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Desperation apparently drove a North Carolina man to commit a bank robbery last week. What made him sit down and wait for police to arrive to arrest him, is another story.
“I’m sort of a logical person and that was my logic, what I came up with,” James Verone said.

Senior Conservative Hints Harper Could Go Nuclear... →
what an inflammatory description, Globe and Mail! oh never mind. Here are some excerpts:
Jason Kenney is suggesting his boss Stephen Harper could do away with the Senate if his Conservative caucus in the Red Chamber doesn’t play ball and accept his reforms.
Choosing his words carefully, Mr. Kenney avoided saying the word “abolish.” Rather, he said the Prime Minister is prepared to “entertain...

Hi!
uhm. I have been away and I am still sorta kind of away, because I am a fragile thing who apparently from time to time has her body completely REJECT THE INTERNET OR ANY COMPUTER OR LAPTOP AT ALL (the HORROR) - but I am coming back! ish. Kind of. My hands still hurt. And my head still throbs. And really, I want to write long-winded posts of many opinions, but even copying and pasting is kind...

Fine.
But look, that “choice” doesn’t exist in a social vacuum, and turning a critical eye to the contours of the that “choice” isn’t about condemning individuals who...

According to Badoo.com, Canadians Just Aren't...
Americans are voted best at making people laugh, while Canada comes in at a dismal twelfth. Considered funnier than Canadians: Italians, Brazilians, Britons and the Dutch.
Least Funny Nationalities: Germans, Russians, Turks.

Things I Meant to Write About This Week But Didn't

– Prime Minister Stephen Harper during a Conservative Convention 2011 Speech

Ahem. Too bad I noticed that AFTER I went: AAAAAUUUUUUGHHHH all up in Tumblr’s support email.
You think I’ll be able to convince them I’m actually tech-savvy (no, really, that’s what my “career” is) and they totally want to hire me some day?
No?

Dear Tumblr,
while I like the new message feature, and seems very pretty (SEND ME MESSAGES SOMEONE SO I CAN USE IT), you know what I really really liked? Seeing both my blogs on the top of the menu.
Yeah. I’m pretty sure this is a bug. Can we fix, please and thank you?
Kisses!

I feel like I should say something about Anthony Weiner and the whole … weinergate thing.
I hope, to be honest (and I say this after perpetuating it myself, but you know) that this dies down for him soon. I one hundred percent do not believe that he should resign, and frankly, I think the people calling for his resignation should get the hell off their high horses.
I don’t believe...

Budget 2011
So the budget, much like the Throne speech (Senate Page notwithstanding) was not particularly shocking or surprising. There were the requisite digs about the Conservative’s new majority and that this is a repetition of nearly the same budget that was tabled in March.
The budget purports to continue the economic growth that Canada has enjoyed and work toward closing the deficit by year...

Well.
I was going to maybe do some live blogging of the question/answer period about the Budget. However, in my efforts, I realized it can be summarized thus:
Opposition [Liberal or NDP]:
Why are you [not doing this/doing this in this way - cutting taxes, leaving out low income Canadians in tax breaks, etc].
Minister of Finance:
On May 2nd, Canadians voted and we won, and this is what they voted...

No. Canada does not need an Arab spring. We are not Libya. We are not Bahrain or Syria. The very fact that you were able to publicly non-violently protest the sitting Prime Minister on the senate floor speaks very much to how very different our countries are.
